Telegraphy
“Basic Sending and Receiving Devices of Telegraphy

In 1843, the American Government gave him money to build an electric telegraph line between “Baltimore and Washington”. The first telegraph message sent on 24th May 1844 was “WHAT HAS GOD WROUGHT”. The sending (key) and receiving (sounder)devices are shown in fig.

Simultaneously, Dr. Oar. Shuaughnessy  of Medical College Calcutta (India) conducted experiments in the year 1839 while servicing East India Company. Construction work on the first telegraph line was completed in 1851.

Electric Telegraph Systems:

Soon after electric telegraph systems had been set up in “England and France”, the systems were joined by laying an undersea cable in 1851. Telegrams could be sent from one country to other.

A Submarine Cable:

A submarine cable was laid between “India and Sri Lanka”in 1858 and landline was constructed between “India and Europe” in 1867.

Telegraph Service America and Europe:

Later on by laying of Ocean undersea cable in 1866 the Telegraph Service between America and Europe was established.

First Telegraph Equipment

The first telegraph equipment, which could print letters directly was devised by Hughes in 1873. Baudot improved this system in 1874 with the introduction of his five-unit code for tele printer  machine working on start stop (for each digits / alphabet) principle.
The machine telegraphy was used for telegrams in the main cities of “India” since 1906. The exchange system for teleprinters  called “Telex” was introduce in 1959.
