Telegraph
The word telegraph was introduced in1793 by Ignace Chappe a Frenchman. 1832 Samuel Morse American invented a code using “Dots and Dashes” to depict letters and numbers. The letters used most often have the easiest signs. These are signs for punctuation marks and a few words like ‘error’.

In 1843, the American Government gave him money to build an electric telegraph line between “Baltimore and Washington”. The first telegraph message sent on 24th May 1844 was “WHAT HAS GOD WROUGHT”. The sending (key) and receiving (sounder)devices are shown in fig.
Simultaneously, Dr. Oar. Shuaughnessy of Medical College Calcutta (India) conducted experiments in the year 1839 while servicing East India Company. Construction work on the first telegraph line was completed in 1851.

lt was initially used for official work. Later on large-scale construction of lines was undertaken and the facility was extended to public.

A submarine cable was laid between “India and Sri Lanka”in 1858 and landline was constructed between “India and Europe” in 1867.

First Telegraph Equipment
The first telegraph equipment, which could print letters directly was devised by Hughes in 1873. Baudot improved this system in 1874 with the introduction of his five-unit code for tele printer machine working on start stop (for each digits / alphabet) principle.
The machine telegraphy was used for telegrams in the main cities of “India” since 1906. The exchange system for teleprinters called “Telex” was introduce in 1959.
